Our Oregon Wine Story

Our Story

First official Oregon Pinot Gris grape harvest at Stoneridge Vineyard

In 1966, third-generation Oregonian Leigh Campbell, M.D. and wife Ceille purchased acreage at the end of a country road atop Pete's Mountain, serendipitously named "Campbell Lane".

From there, it's history. Well, not quite.

Following in the footsteps of Oregon's wine pioneers, the Campbells put in their fair share of work. After the Frenchman Peter A. Weiss, the namesake of Pete's Mountain, settled the land in the 1850s, German and Scandinavian descendants began farming. In order to make room for the 2.65 acres of Pinot Gris grapes, the Campbells had to hand clear the fruit orchards that sprinkled Pete's Mountain. The planting would become the largest Pinot Gris vineyard in the U.S. at the time (at a mere 2.65 acres), sitting above the Willamette River and looking out to Mt. Hood.

What began as a hobby quickly turned into a passion for the Campbells of Campbell Lane. Over the next fifty years, they expanded Stoneridge Vineyard several times and planted a multitude of grape varietals, in effect creating a test vineyard near their residence. With a rare trifecta of excellent Jory soil, climate, and a 700-foot elevation, the grapes from the south-facing slopes are recognized among the highest quality in Oregon. In fact, you've probably already had some of our 15 acres of Stoneridge Vineyard Pinot Gris grapes in your other favorite Oregon wines.

Today, family members Tracy (daughter of Leigh and Ceille) and Andy are taking the next step. With a diverse background in crafts, finance, and efficiency, Andy and Tracy moved to Campbell Lane in 2014 and introduced our craft wines in 2015, bearing the name of that country road and the Clan Campbell Coat of Arms, a symbol of courage and hospitality. In 2016, we added over six acres of several Pinot Noir varieties including 667, Pommard, 777, and Wadenswil clones to Stoneridge Vineyard and grafted almost 2 acres of vines to Chardonnay in April 2019.

In an effort to bring our craft wines to a multitude of wine drinkers and reduce our carbon footprint, we have added stainless steel kegs and aluminum cans to our quiver. Our Stoneridge Vineyard grapes are LIVE certified and Salmon Safe as well as Vegan. We are proud to be one of only 321 vineyards to receive one of the highest certifications in the world for viticulture under the LIVE certification. Using the latest in internationally accredited and evolving standards, LIVE ensures that certified wineries and vineyards are "minimizing environmental impacts, preserving agricultural fertility, and sustaining economic viability for generations to come." As one of 350 Salmon Safe vineyards, we focus on reducing runoff and enhancing native biodiversity on our property, which means we make a conscious decision to avoid pesticides that would be harmful downstream. Our family hopes that you'll join us in this journey and respect the art of winemaking as much as we do.
